Ada E. Leeke (1914–1988) served as an officer in the U.S. Army Military Government in Korea following World War II. She was a liaison officer to Major General Archer L. Lerch, military governor of Korea (1946), editor of Chukan Digest (1946–47), and chief of the Publications Section supervising all publications issued by the military government until it was dissolved. This collection consists of two boxes containing a copy of the manuscript of Leeke’s book, When Americans Came to Korea (Freeman, S.D.: Pine Hill Press, ©1991), and prints of the photographs used in the book.
This material was donated to the Center for Korean Studies by Leeke’s co-author, Evelyn H. Shaw of La Jolla, California.
Digitized versions of selected photographs from this collection are available on line in the Center for Korean Studies digital archive: http://cksdigital.manoa.hawaii.edu/collections/show/4.
