This collection consists of a photocopy of a typescript manuscript titled “Memories and Thoughts” (corrected and updated to January 25, 2000) by Richard F. Underwood. The 122-page memoir consists of six parts: (1) Childhood, ages 0-15; (2) High school, ages 15-18; (3) U.S. Army service, June 1945 to February 1947; (4) Start college, ages 20-23; (5) U.S. Army service, August 1950 to August 1952; and (6) Marriage, Japan, Korea, AKF, and SFS.
Author’s note at the head of the manuscript: “An informal account of my life, primarily from recollections. These should be read as recollections and not as documented history. I have tried to verify much of this writing, but make no claims as to complete accuracy. These writings do, however, reflect my own memory and in no matter of importance have I knowingly misrepresented events.”
The manuscript was furnished to the Center for Korean Studies, with the author’s consent, by Allan R. Millett in 2010.
