Ada E. Leeke (1914−1988) served as an officer in the U.S. Army Military Government in Korea following World War II. She was a liaison officer to Major General Archer L. Lerch, military governor of Korea (1946), editor of Chukan Digest (1946−47), and chief of the Publications Section supervising all publications issued by the military government until it was dissolved. This collection consists of two boxes containing a copy of the manuscript of Leeke’s book, When Americans Came to Korea (Freeman, S.D.: Pine Hill Press, ©1991), and prints of the photographs used in the book.
This material was donated to the Center for Korean Studies by Leeke’s co-author, Evelyn H. Shaw of La Jolla, California.
Digitized versions of selected photographs from this collection are available on line in the Center for Korean Studies digital archive: http://cksdigital.manoa.hawaii.edu/collections/show/4.
